Formula feeding essentials became part of our newborn feeding journey sooner than I expected.
When I was pregnant, I planned to breastfeed, and for the most part, that’s what we did.
But like many feeding journeys, ours evolved over time.
As the months went on, we introduced bottles, I pumped occasionally, family members helped with some feedings, and we eventually used formula too.
For me, formula wasn’t an all-or-nothing decision. It simply became another tool that gave us more flexibility.
It meant Grandma could help with a feeding. It meant I didn’t have to be the only person responsible for every bottle. And during seasons when pumping felt like one more thing on an already full plate, it gave me another option.

What You Actually Need for Formula Feeding
The good news?
Formula feeding doesn’t require a huge amount of gear.
There are plenty of products marketed to new parents, but most aren’t necessary.
A few practical essentials made the biggest difference for us.
1. Baby Bottles
The most important formula feeding essential is a bottle your baby actually likes.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to know which bottle your baby will prefer until they’re actually here.
We had good luck with:

My biggest recommendation is not to buy a huge stash of one bottle before baby arrives.

2. Formula
Choosing a formula ended up being one of the things I spent the most time researching.
Because I was breastfeeding too, I wanted something that felt like a natural complement to breast milk.
After a lot of reading, we decided to use a goat milk-based formula.
One of the reasons I felt comfortable with it is that goat milk proteins are naturally smaller than cow’s milk proteins and are often considered easier for babies to digest. It also felt like a closer match to what I was looking for when supplementing breastfeeding.
Of course, every baby is different, and what works well for one baby may not work for another.
The biggest thing I learned is that there isn’t one perfect formula.
There are a lot of good options available, and sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find what works best for your baby.
For us, having a formula on hand gave me flexibility.
It meant Grandma could help with a feeding. It meant I didn’t have to stress if I was away for a few hours. And it gave me peace of mind knowing we had another option available whenever we needed it.
Once we found a formula that worked well, I tried not to overthink it and focused on what mattered most: a happy, growing baby.
3. A Bottle Warmer
Could you live without a bottle warmer?
Absolutely.
Did it make daily life easier?
Also yes.
My baby became surprisingly particular about bottle temperature, and warming bottles quickly was much easier than trying to figure out the perfect temperature every time.

- middle-of-the-night feeds
- fussy hungry moments
- feeding on little sleep

4. Bottle Sterilizer
Some parents sterilize bottles using boiling water.
That works perfectly fine.
Personally, I loved having a sterilizer.
Instead of boiling bottles on the stove, I could quickly sterilize them and have them ready to use again.
In those early newborn weeks, anything that saved time felt worthwhile.

5. Bottle Brush and Drying Rack
This is one of those formula feeding essentials that doesn’t seem exciting until you’re washing bottles multiple times a day.
Having:
- a good bottle brush
- a drying rack
- a designated bottle cleaning area
made everything feel more organized.
It also helped keep bottle parts from disappearing into random kitchen drawers.

6. A Formula Feeding Station
One of the best things I did during the newborn stage was keep all of our formula feeding essentials together.
I wasn’t constantly searching for:
- bottles
- burp cloths
- formula
- water
Everything stayed within reach.

7. Burp Cloths (More Than You Think)
Formula-fed babies still spit up.
A lot.
Burp cloths ended up being one of the most-used items in our house.
I kept them:
- by the feeding station
- beside the bed
- in the diaper bag
- on the couch

8. Formula Maker (Optional, But Helpful)
This definitely falls into the “nice to have” category.
You do not need a formula maker.
But if you’re preparing multiple bottles every day, it can save a surprising amount of time.
The biggest benefits for us were:
- consistent bottle temperature
- faster bottle prep
- fewer steps when exhausted
For some families, it’s worth every penny.
For others, it’s completely unnecessary.

9. A Portable Feeding Basket
One thing I learned quickly:
Babies don’t always eat where you expect them to.
I loved having a basket that could move room to room with me.
Inside I kept:
- burp cloths
- bottles
- snacks for me
- water
- nursing pads
- small feeding supplies
Having everything together saved a lot of unnecessary trips around the house.
10. A Splurge Worth Considering for Formula-Feeding Families
I didn’t personally use an all-in-one bottle washer, sterilizer, and dryer, but if I were exclusively formula feeding, I’d strongly consider one.
The biggest daily chore with bottle feeding isn’t actually making bottles—it’s washing them over and over again.

Formula Feeding Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
There are endless products marketed to formula-feeding parents.
Most aren’t necessary.
What helped us most was keeping things simple:
- bottles that worked well
- a reliable formula
- a bottle warmer
- a cleaning system
- a feeding station that kept everything organized
That’s really it.
You don’t need every formula feeding essential on the market to successfully feed your baby.
You just need a system that works for your family.
And if your feeding journey ends up looking different than you expected, that’s okay too.
Fed is best, and finding a routine that supports both you and your baby matters far more than doing things perfectly.
